You check the yardage on the irrigation head, choose your club and then end up 15 yards short of the green in the worst rough on the course. What happened?  Maybe the irrigation head was marked improperly! Here is how irrigation heads are marked for yardage...

1. The course pays for the irrigation heads to be measured by laser to the middle of the greens.
2. The outside company measures each of these head and diagrams the head location and yardage
3. The yardages come in to the club in bulk
4. A member of the golf or maintenance staff takes the diagrams and attaches the yardage plaques to the individual irrigation head.

...here is what might happen!

1. The measurement might be wrong in the first place
2. The staff member may make a mistake in choosing the yardage from the diagram (not too hard to do when you are talking hundreds of heads
3. An irrigation head malfunctions - then you are at the mercy of the irrigation tech to get the right yardage on the replacement head

What about GPS? GPS is fantastic in telling you EXACTLY where YOU are, but not so good at telling YOU how far the TARGET is from your location. So if you are looking for the under water structure that means "fish on" or you are lost on the highway - GPS is the answer. Not so much for golf.
